Understanding Timber Choices

Choosing timber for a tropical house involves more than selecting a colour or grain pattern. A structural beam, an exposed deck, and an interior cabinet perform different jobs. Each needs material specifications suited to its purpose and environment.

Merbau, Bangkirai, and teak are useful starting points for understanding these choices. Bale Maker’s published Samudra Resort project documents the use of Merbau and Bangkirai in structural adaptation. Teak provides a further comparison for residential construction, joinery, and furnishings.

Understanding their applications—and the importance of grading, moisture control, and finishing—helps owners prepare a clearer brief for a tropical home or resort project.

Merbau — A Hardwood for Construction and Joinery

Merbau, also known as Kwila, is used in construction, flooring, decking, joinery, and furniture. WoodSolutions describes it as a hardwood with high natural durability and strength.

Its heartwood develops from yellowish or orange-brown tones toward a deeper reddish brown. The grain is commonly interlocked or wavy, giving the material a distinctive appearance in exposed timber elements.

Merbau also has practical considerations. Although it generally seasons with relatively little shrinkage, drying remains part of material preparation. Gum bleed can affect finishing, and untreated sapwood is susceptible to lyctid borer attack. These characteristics should be considered when specifying the material and coating system. For a house project, discuss where Merbau is proposed, the grade required, and how the selected finish will work with the timber. A species name alone does not define the complete specification.

When Bangkirai is proposed for your project, ask for the timber identification and relevant technical specification. That provides a firmer basis for discussing structural use, exposure conditions, and finishing than relying on a trade name alone.

Teak — A Comparison for Building Elements and Furniture

Teak, known as Jati in Indonesia, is identified botanically as Tectona grandis. Its typical golden-brown heartwood and established uses make it a useful comparison when considering timber finishes and architectural elements.

WoodSolutions lists applications including flooring, decking, framing, cladding, indoor and outdoor furniture, and decorative woodwork. It also describes teak’s low shrinkage and natural durability.

Teak has fabrication considerations of its own. Its silica content can blunt cutting tools, while its oily nature can make gluing more demanding. Untreated sapwood is susceptible to borer attack. Match the Timber Specification to Its Function

For structural timber, grading is particularly important. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that wood pieces can differ substantially in mechanical properties. Moisture Control Matters Before Installation

Wood exchanges moisture with the surrounding air. Changes in moisture content can cause dimensional changes, which makes drying, handling, and storage relevant throughout production and construction.

Ask the supplier or project team how moisture requirements will be specified, checked, and maintained before installation.

Durability and Finishing Need Separate Attention

Wood deterioration can involve fungi, insects, bacteria, and marine borers. Fungal growth depends on suitable conditions, including moisture, temperature, and oxygen. Finishing addresses another part of performance. For outdoor timber, protection from water, sunlight, and weathering is a central consideration. Before approving a finish, request a sample and discuss surface preparation, application, and maintenance instructions.
