Villa Sunsett Wave

In 2011 During 2011, Bale Maker was awarded to design and renovate one of the most classic Villa's, located in West Bali, Villa Sunset Medewi. The existing Villas were in dire need of renovating including the refurbishment of all existing doors and windows, Kitchen complete re-model, Outside dry and wet areas and dining and furniture items. Another major part of the contract was to create a centre terrace pavilion which would link up the two guest villas with the main living building. This took several months for Bale Maker to come up with a suitable design as the buildings were all previously built in different elevations. So providing something within somewhat of a confined area with existing buildings without inhibiting views from anywhere within the site was a real challenge. The end result was the design and manufacture of a magnificent Prow roof pavilion, timber decks (over concrete slabs) privacy, room divider screens, and a new timber staircase linking the new pavilion to the main building. Another major challenge was making the villa user safe and friendly and eliminating all the typical mistakes with the original Bali design, where there were slippery steps, no guard rails in areas, and bad egress from one area to the next. To solve these types of issues, Bale Maker designed and built: A new timber pool deck, a new timber deck and balustrading system in front of Villa-1, A new non-slip, stone tile deck (non porous type) in front of Villa-2, and balustrading for stair areas and guard rail systems for all upstairs windows in the main building. Another major job was renovating the original concrete Bali style kitchen. Again as this was pre-existing it had to be thought through prior to the work being done. As there was an existing concrete pillar in the kitchen area Bale Maker opted to create a completely new Merbau timber kitchen incorporating the existing column into the timer island Bar. Modern kitchen equipment such as wall ovens, cook tops and a range hood were also installed. We used about 6 coats of marine varnish to give all of the kitchen tops a wonderful non stick, easy clean sheen and hard wearing surface. Bale Maker also renovated and supplied furniture including dining table and chairs, a tropical lounge suite and new King beds for each villa and the main building. Bale Maker finished off with the design and installation of a complete insect screening system using Merbau hardwood and anodized aluminum insect screen doors and window screens. This has reduced the energy consumption dramatically as no longer are the aircondioners required to run all day and night as all doors and windows can be left open and catch the predominant trade winds.
Sunset Villa owner, Mr. John Kulper, an ardent yoga scholar could not believe the transformation Bale Maker had made to the place. On his first visit back he commented that he and his young family could spend all day outside now on the covered pavilion as it is covered and the views from the new pavilion is sublime. He also commented that the flow from one area to the next was soft and yet fluent and the whole place now has a relaxing feeling which is very important to a yoga scholar such as John himself.
